Accomplishments

JELANI LED THE WAY FOR TRANSPARENCY AND GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY REFORMS. 

  • Advocated for City Council subcommittee meetings to be video recorded and accessible on the City's website.
  • Spearheaded the creation of a performance management and measurement system, including the development of a public dashboard to track progress on City goals.
  • Proposed the City Council adopted subcommittee restructure - reducing the number of subcommittees from 19 to 5 - to increase efficiency and management of Council priorities.

 

JELANI CHAMPIONED STRATEGIC INITIATIVES TO FURTHER CITY PRIORITIES AND GOALS.

  • Authored the City's Youth and Young Adult Services Master Plan to identify service gaps, align resources, and create a coordinated youth services network to improve outcomes for Pittsburg youth.
  • Initiated the creation of the City's Economic Development Strategic Action Plan to guide the City's economic development efforts over the next 5-10 years.
  • Spearheaded the launch of the City's mural and public art initiative to improve the aesthetics of the city while honoring its heritage and creating opportunities for local artists.

 

JELANI SUPPORTED FISCALLY SOUND POLICIES TO ENSURE A BALANCED BUDGET WHILE PRIORITIZING CORE CITY SERVICES.

  • Approved a balanced budget every year while limiting the use of reserves, leading to several years with budget surpluses.
  • Increased investments in City's street maintenance leading to improvements of major roadways including Leland Road, Loveridge Road, and Railroad Avenue.
  • Advocated for the creation of a 115 Trust to address the City's unfunded liabilities.
  • Worked with colleagues and staff to negotiate fair and competitive contracts with bargaining groups that addressed workforce needs while maintaining City's strong fiscal position.

 

JELANI CONSISTENTLY VOTED TO SUPPORT INVESTMENTS INTO THE COMMUNITY

  • Approved the renovation and re-opening of the Marina Community Center.
  • Increased funding to expand hours at the Pittsburg library.
  • Supported local restaurants through the Pittsburg Eats business coaching program.
  • Approved funding to upgrade restroom facilities at City Park (estimated completion February 2025).
